We’re in the run-up to the end of season 5 of the podcast - how? Where is this year going?
Summer always feels like it should be a blur of reading out in the garden until the sun goes down, escaping to the beach or the seafront on the weekends and the long, slow drag of time ahead to just…relax. Ahh, summer holidays, will we ever stop missing them?
At least we still have lighter evenings to read late into the night, right? Hopefully you’ll get some recomendations and inspiration from everything below.
Happy summer!
The Dark Academicals
You can listen to the full season on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Castbox and Google Podcasts.
We’re coming up on the end of the season, so it’s time you caught up with the latest episodes! We revisited Phoebe Wynne and headed to the French riviera with ‘The Ruins’. Did dark academia vibes thrive in the heat of summer?
Our dark academia adjacent title for season 5 is Evelyn Waugh’s modern classic set between the wars, ‘Brideshead Revisited’. It’s an early campus novel which often quoted as a sub-genre that pre-cursors - can we see that in the novel?
You can read our full written review on ‘Books, Burgers and Backpacks’.
We really hope you’ve been enjoying season 5 so far - we have! If there are any titles you’d like to suggest to us to cover, please let us know and we’ll throw it into the hat for future seasons.
Books, Burgers and Backpacks
We’re busier than ever on the blog - so much reading! So much writing!
Sarah runs through some of the biggest book releases coming this summer that she’s excited to get her hands on - are any of these on your wishlist?
Not all mythology retellings are Greek! I know, it was a shock to us too, but they exist! So Sophie put them all in a list, from Norse to Chinese, East African to Celtic, for a little something different in the mythology realm.
One of Sophie’s favourite reads of 2022 was ‘The Dead Romantics’ so snagging a copy of ‘The Seven Year Slip’ on NetGalley was a no-brainer - time slip? magical realism? romance? Sign. Us. Up.
This newsletter is completely free, but if you’d like to support us and haven’t already, please check out the podcast on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and drop us a review or a rating if the mood takes you, or you can even buy us a coffee.
See you in two weeks for a book club mailer for ‘The Cloisters’ by Katy Hays! This is one of our most anticipated titles released this year so we’re super excited to get stuck in - read along with us!
