Can we even call it Dark Academia without that signature Gothic-inspired architecture? And really, can we call it Dark Academia without it being set (for the most part) on campus?
That's to be discussed (and sometimes argued) on the podcast itself.
But for today, this is where the term “Collegiate Gothic” comes in handy.
In the 19th century, and even into the 20th (arguably), there was a trend in architecture to hark back to Gothic styles. Called the “Gothic Revival”, we can easily point to “Collegiate Gothic” as an arm of this trend which really took hold in more recent years on the campuses of institutions like Cornell and Princeton.
