It’s a truth universally acknowledged that paranormal fiction, the Golden Age of YA and dark academia novels provide The Best of the dark and brooding boys and men of fiction.
Something that we’ve noticed as we’ve journeyed through more modern dark academia novels is the way that the dark and brooding (usually male) love interests are portrayed in a way that’s a lot less based on the questionable traits and actions of earlier dark and brooding men.
We talk about ‘Belladonna’, ‘The Whispering Dark’, ‘Gilmore Girls’, ‘Hell Bent’ and ‘The Raven Boys’ from the recent seasons of the podcast, but we also wax lyrical about Mr Darcy as the poster boy for dark and brooding and how to do it RIGHT.
This is the final instalment of the first term of the Curriculum, but we’ll be back next week with the beginning of our summer series, the Summer AV Club, which will take us to the new Autumn/Winter term of the Curriculum that will start in September!
